Tours to a Scottish Whisky Distillery

Scotch whisky has been enjoyed for at least 500 years and is deeply woven into Scotland’s history, geography, culture and people. It’s our national drink, known as ‘the water of life’ or, in Gaelic, ‘uisge beatha’.

Our country is home to over 120 distilleries, across five whisky-making regions, and behind the doors of each one a mysterious and magical process takes place. One thing is for sure –wherever you find a Scottish whisky distillery you’ll find a source of soft, sparkling water. This vital ingredient, together with malted barley and yeast, creates malt whisky.

You can unwrap some of these mysteries on a Scotch whisky tour to Glengoyne Distillery, often described as Scotland’s most beautiful distillery, where the amber nectar has been lovingly crafted since 1820.

On our Dumbarton Castle, Loch Lomond and Scotch Whisky tour, all in under six hours, you’ll enjoy a Wee Tasting Tour which starts with a dram of the Glengoyne 12 Year. Your small group tour will learn about the fascinating process where the whisky is poured into oak casks and hidden away for years to mature before it’s bottled. You might enjoy a stroll to the hidden waterfall that inspired the creation of Glengoyne nearly 200 years ago.

A Glengoyne distillery tour is also at the heart of our Malt Master Whisky Tour, Dumbarton Castle and Loch Lomond shore excursion from Greenock (Glasgow). Arriving by luxury mini coach, you’ll take the role of Malt Master and, with a taste here and there from five different samples of Glengoyne, you’ll create your own unique single malt whisky. You’ll even receive a small bottle and record of your recipe to take home.

There’s usually time for a dram of whisky on our three and four day tours to the Isle of Skye, the Highlands and Loch Ness, which depart from Glasgow and Edinburgh. Your friendly driver-guide might choose one of Skye’s sweet and full-bodied whiskies to taste at Talisker or Torabhaig Distillery. If we don’t manage to fit in a Skye distillery we often stop for a whisky and chocolate tasting session at Dalwhinnie Distillery, Scotland’s highest distillery.

On our four day tour to the Isles of Mull, Iona and the Highlands, departing from Glasgow and Edinburgh, you’ll have time to visit Tobermory Distillery, one of Scotland’s oldest commercial distilleries which was established in 1798. On our six day island hopping tour to the Isles of Mull, Iona and Skye, from Glasgow and Edinburgh, there’s also the chance to visit Tobermory Distillery and Dalwhinnie Distillery for a dram.

Whichever tour you choose, you’re guaranteed an authentic Scottish whisky experience.
